What does Maine law say about sports betting?
Maine sports betting is legal in person at casinos and on mobile apps. Mobile betting launched on 2023-11-03, when Maine's four federally recognized tribes held exclusive mobile licenses. The Gambling Control Unit lists DraftKings, Caesars and Oxford Casino-Hotel & Sports Book as current operators. - Regulator. The Gambling Control Unit within the Maine Department of Public Safety administers and enforces Maine's sports wagering law (Title 8, chapter 35). Its director has the power to regulate the conduct of sports wagering and issues all licenses. Source: Maine Revised Statutes, Title 8, section 1203, checked October 6, 2026.
- Minimum age. An operator may not accept a sports wager from anyone under 21 in Maine (8 MRSA section 1213, subsection 1). The minimum age to place a sports bet is therefore 21. Source: Maine Revised Statutes, Title 8, section 1213, checked October 6, 2026.
- Tax and licensing. Maine's legislative fiscal note on LD 585, the bill that set up regulated sports wagering, credits the state with 10% of facility sports wagering revenue and 16% of mobile sports wagering revenue; operators keep the rest. The note is dated April 5, 2022. Source: Maine Legislature, Fiscal Note for LD 585 (130th Legislature), checked October 6, 2026.
- In-person and tribal rules. Only a federally recognized Maine tribe can hold a mobile sports wagering license, one per tribe (8 MRSA 1207). In-person licenses go to casinos, off-track betting facilities and commercial tracks outside Bangor, up to 10 facility licenses (8 MRSA 1206).
